The tropical heat may have receded, but the temperature on the Lancashire and Cheshire AFL playing fields was red hot with county cup and league games producing goals galore, plenty of shocks and loads of drama.

This was encapsulated in the Manchester Amateur Cup match at Rushford Park, with the L and C new boys beating Manchester Leaguers Heywood St James in an incredible game by 8-6 after leading 4-3 at the break.

Joining them in round two are AFC Oldham, who won another thriller by 5-3 at FC Babylon, Old Strets reserves who beat Egerton reserves 4-2 in a spirited display and Trafford United, who won 2-0 at Ashton-on-Mersey.

There was a big shock in the Premier Division as champions Moston Brook lost their first game of the season, being unable to penetrate a solid North Walkden defence as they scored the only goal of the game at the other end.

Salford Vics have a game in hand and are just two points behind Brook after an impressive 6-2 derby win over Irlam Steel Rangers.

AFC Monton have made a solid unbeaten start in the league and they picked up their first win with a clinical 4-0 win over Chadderton Park.

Santos kept up their hot scoring levels by beating South Manchester 6-3 with the goals shared by Ryan McConkie (two), Tom Barnes, Reece Holden, Mike Patterson and Sam Ryder.

AFC Stockport played their first game of the season and enjoyed a 4-1 win over Saddleworth 3D, with goals from Jordan Conway, Joe Eaton, Luke Rudden and Marcel France.

Meanwhile, it’s tight at the top of a very competitive division A with just a point between the top five teams.

Mellor reserves lead the way after crushing Spurley Hey reserves 12-1, but second-placed AFC Oldham have a game in hand on the leaders.
