After a pretty dreary summer’s weather, Lancashire and Cheshire Amateur League footballers were able to enjoy tropical conditions as they kicked off the new season with a full programme for all seven divisions.
Reigning champions Moston Brook showed their intent with a 3-0 win at old rivals Irlam Steel Rangers.
It was their second win to put them in control of the Premier Division to add to the McKeown Cup they won pre season by beating the LAL champions Chaddertonians.
Brook are joined at the top of the table on points by Abacus Media, who had their second win of the season in a breathless 5-4 victory at newly-promoted Chadderton Park.
Elsewhere locally, Santos were prolific scorers last season, and they kicked off in division three with a hard earned victory at home to Badger Casuals, 5-3.
Badgers scored early, but goals by Danny Brierley, Bryan Gibson, Sam Ryder and Ben Marshall put Santos 4-1 up at the interval.
An early second half strike and penalty to the visitors made it a tense finale and a last minute strike by Will Garner sealed the victory.
