An Oldham weightlifter has been crowned champion of the world.

Samantha Travis, aged 37, won the gold medal - and broke THREE world records - at the World Masters Championships in Orlando, Florida.

Samantha grew up on Holts Village, before moving to Shaw when she was eight.

A former head girl at Royton and Crompton School, Samantha moved to Stalybridge when in her 30s.

She told the Chronicle: "I got into weightlifting when I was 30 after going to a beginners seminar at my local CrossFit gym.

"The coach said I had potential in the sport, so I decided to ditch CrossFit and pursue weightlifting.

"I did well at regional and national level, achieving podium spots for three years, until I became British Senior Champion in the women’s 48kg weight class prior to Covid.

"During Covid I fell pregnant and gave birth, but went back to weightlifting in 2021/2022.

"In 2022 I won the British Masters Championships in May and broke all the British records in the women’s 49kg class.

"I then competed in Poland in August at the European Masters Championships, and again won gold and broke the records.

"Then in December, I attended the worlds in Orlando where I cut down a further weight class to the 45kg class, winning the title and breaking the snatch record, the clean and jerk record and the total record."

Samantha trains and is a coach at the Triple X Performance Centre Weightlifting Gym in Stalybridge.
