Stunning defeat for Werneth

Leaders Werneth saw their Oldham Golf League ‘A’ Premier title hopes take a dive when they were beaten 8-0 at Dukinfield.
With holders Denton getting a hard-earned three points away at Blackley, Denton and Werneth now meet at Manchester Road with Nigel Brookes’ side holding a slender one-point lead.
However, though a draw would be enough for Denton to see off Werneth, they will be looking for a big points haul as Ashton are still lurking following their 6-2 win over C&R.
Martin Wild’s men are also only a point adrift but they have two games left to play, one at home to Blackey and the return game away at C&R so it could get really close.
And whilst those three are still fighting it out for the title they will have one eye over their shoulder as Blackley still have hopes of avoiding relegation (the bottom three go down) if they can get a shock win at Ashton.
Gareth Morris’s side gave themselves at least a chance by beating Denton and are now three points adrift of both Ashton and Werneth and four of Denton.
Dukinfield and C&R are confirmed as relegated.
The ‘A’ Championship was decided on the last day of the regular season with Brookdale’s 6-2 home win over North Manchester enough to see Gaz Smith’s men over the line.
Those two clubs plus Stamford will be promoted back to the Premier Division for 2019.
In the B Divisions, Donal Slattery’s side made it two full seasons unbeaten in the league when they confirmed top spot in the ‘B’ East division with a 6-2 win away at basement side Werneth.
Blackley lost 6-2 at Denton but that was just enough to claim second spot by a point from the fast-finishing Ashton where Danny Andrew’s men followed up an 8-0 win last week with a 7-1 away success at C&R, coming up agonisingly short.
Over in ‘B’ West, Oldham booked a top-two play-off spot courtesy of a 7-1 win over close rivals Castle Hawk but whether that is first or second place depends on Stamford.
Stamford still have a game to play and, following their 6-2 home win over Saddleworth, they need 5 points in the return at Mountain Ash this week to claim the top spot which, crucially, would give them home advantage in the semi finals.
