Reigning A Premier champions Denton are not giving up their Oldham and District Golf League crown without a fight.

They made a poor start with one win in their opening four games, but a most recent 8-0 win over basement side C&R has put them within striking distance of leaders Werneth – whom they have yet to play at home.

Werneth did their cause no harm with a precious 5-3 away win at Blackley but that was all but matched by Ashton who drew 4-4 at Dukinfield and Martin Wild’s Ashton side trail top spot by four points with a game in hand.

North Manchester and Brookdale - the two main title contenders in the A Championship – both won 6-2 away at Oldham and Saddleworth respectively, so North stay two points ahead.

North sit it out this week so Brookdale could be top before they clash on the final week of the regular season for title honours as both are already assured of promotion along with Stamford.

In the B East, Dukinfield remain unbeaten after a 4-4 draw at Ashton and saw their lead double to four as nearest challengers Blackley lost 6-2 at Werneth, the Garden Suburb side’s first home win after three consecutive draws.

C&R will be waiting for the top two to slip up on the run in after a 7-1 win over Denton kept them in touch.

Meanwhile, in the B West, Stamford’s games in hand could prove crucial in deciding the play-off berths though Oldham are making a fist of it, particularly after a 6-2 away win at North Manchester.
