30% growth for Oldham outfit GoSimpleTax following funding boost

Date published: 05 February 2023

Oldham-based tax software specialist GoSimpleTax has handled almost a third more self-assessment tax returns than last year, following a £250k investment to support growth.

The business has managed 30 per cent more self-assessment tax returns before the recent January 31 annual deadline than it handled the previous tax year.

The increased volume in customer activity follows a £250k investment from npif-FW Capital Debt Finance managed by FW Capital and part of the Northern Powerhouse Investment Fund (npif) in October 2022, which aimed to create nine jobs and drive the business’ growth strategy.

Amanda Swales, director of GoSimpleTax, said: “January is always our busiest time of the year as many people typically leave their returns until close to the January 31 deadline.

"This year, however, we’ve not only seen a marked increase in the volume of returns being submitted via our software in January, but also greater numbers of people submitting their returns towards the end of 2022.

“There was a definite pre-Christmas boost in the number of people finishing their return compared to the same period last year, and that increased rate of usage has remained constant throughout January.

"I’m delighted that the impact of the additional funding is so clear to see and look forward to continuing to grow the business over the coming year,” she added.

Established in 2013, GoSimpleTax employs 10 people at its Oldham office with more than 100 years combined experience in the accounting industry.

The software was developed to help individuals submit their tax return to HMRC without the need for an accountant.

Its cloud-based software uses complex algorithms to prompt users on income and expenditure, to help them calculate their tax payable correctly.

It is one of HMRC’s recognised partners for Making Tax Digital, which is due to come into force for Income Tax in April, 2026.
