A town centre road in Oldham could be closed to all traffic until tomorrow (Friday) after a water main burst.

United Utilities are ‘urgently’ dealing with the issue on Waterloo Street, off Oldham Way in Glodwick.

The road is closed to vehicles in both directions between Woodstock Street and Hardy Street while repair works are completed.

The closure could last until tomorrow, according to Oldham Council.

The town hall says United Utilities ‘did not inform’ the council about the road closure, but the highways team is now working with the water company to help divert motorists along alternative routes.

A spokesperson for the council added that ‘immediate works are underway’ and the council are seeking more information from United Utilities.

Traffic around the area is currently flowing smoothly, except for some minor congestion along Park Road, according to Google Maps.

Waterloo Road provides access to Oldham Bethel Church, the Jalalabad Jamay mosque and the local Post Office.

A United Utilities spokesperson said: “Engineers are currently fixing a leak on Waterloo Street in Oldham.

“We are working as quickly as we can to get the work completed and we apologise for the inconvenience this has caused.”
