Dedicated Oldham pals conquer six stadiums in 32-mile fund-raising walk for Alzheimer’s Research UK

A team of five dedicated friends from Oldham have gone the extra mile - 32 of them, to be exact - to support pioneering dementia research, raising almost £500 in the process.

The group took on the ambitious challenge, trekking to six of Manchester’s most iconic football stadiums in a single day.

Setting off from Latics' Boundary Park, they powered through to FC United's Broadhurst Park, the Etihad Stadium at Manchester City, Stockport's Edgeley Park, United's Old Trafford, and finished at Salford City's Peninsula Stadium.

The money raised will help the charity power world-class studies focusing on prevention, diagnosis and treatments for dementia.

There are nearly one million people in the UK living with dementia.

Most commonly caused by Alzheimer’s disease, dementia affects people’s memory, behaviour and personality and can be a challenging illness for families and loved-ones.

While not all five of the group have had experiences with Alzheimer’s in their family, they still believed it was worth raising awareness for those who have, and still suffer, with Alzheimer’s.

Samuel said: “It was great to do it with a group of close friends.

"We are all over the moon with the amount we’ve managed to raise so far.”

Simon McDermott, Regional Fundraising Officer at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said: “Dementia affects a significant proportion of the population – one in three people over 65 in the UK will die with some form of the condition.

"Alzheimer’s and the other forms of dementia are now one of society’s biggest medical challenges, but with research they can be overcome.

“We can’t thank Sam and the team enough for raising vital funds for dementia research and helping us in our mission to make life-changing research breakthroughs for people with dementia.”
