Primary school pupils blast off into science at TOAN

Date published: 10 February 2025

Budding scientists from primary schools across Oldham have been launching into learning at E-ACT the Oldham Academy North (TOAN), thanks to Big Bang Club - a series of fun and engaging weekly science workshops.

Pupils from Years 5 and 6 have been stepping into TOAN’s state-of-the-art science labs and enjoying conducting exciting experiments to ignite their curiosity and spark a love of learning.

The workshops, led by TOAN’s very own scientist-in-chief, Daniel Lay, have given primary pupils the chance to use real laboratory equipment and explore the wonders of science like never before.

One of the highlights has been a top-secret space mission, where pupils have been tasked with analysing soil samples sent from Mars.

With experiments that are truly out of this world, the young learners have been reaching for the stars with their scientific discoveries.

The sessions are already creating a Big Bang, with pupils and teachers alike praising the sessions.

Ms Snooks from Holy Cross Primary School shared her experience.

She said: "It was brilliant!

"Children revisited prior learning, which led nicely onto new learning at their level.

"They thoroughly enjoyed being ‘proper’ scientists using equipment they have never used before, as well as being given the freedom to experiment with the different samples given.

"It was such a well-organised event and one the children will remember for a long time."

TOAN Headteacher Jess Giraud said: "It’s fantastic to see so many young learners coming through our doors and getting excited about science.

"Supporting our local primary schools is really important to us and this is a great way of giving pupils the chance to experience what secondary school learning is all about.

"Schools in Oldham working together can have such a positive impact, and we’re proud to be playing our part in inspiring the next generation of students."

As a result of the success of the Big Bang Club, TOAN will be switching from test tubes to team sports in the summer and launching a new series of sports workshops in partnership with the Manchester United Foundation.

These sessions will continue to help local pupils build confidence, develop new skills, and feel at home at TOAN as they prepare for secondary school.
