George’s marathon rowing challenge - a mile a day for Age UK Oldham

Date published: 03 February 2025

For 26 days, George Mills is taking on an incredible challenge - rowing one mile every day until he reaches the full marathon distance of 26.2 miles.

But this is more than just a test of endurance - it’s a heartfelt way to give back to Age UK Oldham, the charity that helped him regain his strength and confidence.

George’s journey with Age UK Oldham began when he joined their Falls Prevention Exercise Class, a programme designed to improve balance, strength, and mobility in older adults.

The impact on his physical and mental wellbeing was life-changing.

Thanks to the support and guidance he received, he now feels fitter, stronger, and more determined than ever - so much so that he’s setting out to achieve something he once thought impossible.

“I wouldn’t have been able to take on a challenge like this without the help of Age UK Oldham,” said George.

“Their Falls class gave me back my confidence and mobility, and this is my way of saying thank you.”

Each day, George pushes through another mile, proving to himself - and to others - that it’s never too late to set new goals.

He’s hoping his challenge will inspire others to stay active while also raising much-needed funds to support Age UK Oldham’s vital services, which help older people stay independent, connected, and well.
