The children of Year 6 at Saint Joseph's RC Junior, Infant and Nursery School in Shaw have been praised for their exceptional charity work over the past year.
The class, led by their dedicated teacher Mrs Cath Knowles, raised an incredible £879.06 for two local causes close to their hearts - Dr. Kershaw's Hospice in Royton and The Diocese of Salford's Caritas Charity.
Throughout the 2023-2024 academic year, the generous Year 6 pupils organised a series of fun and creative fundraising events to reach their impressive goal.
"The children were so enthusiastic and passionate about supporting these charities," said Mrs. Knowles.
"They came up with so many wonderful ideas and worked tirelessly as a team to bring them to life."
Some of the standout events included a festive Christmas cupcake competition followed by a Mince Pie and Merriment coffee morning, a day of the dead competition and even an Easter Garden competition.
"The children really took ownership of the projects," Mrs Knowles added.
"They divided up tasks, delegated responsibilities and encouraged each other every step of the way.
"It was amazing to see their teamwork and community spirit in action."
Headteacher Mr Garry Needle was beaming with pride over the class' charitable achievements.
"We place a strong emphasis on Catholic Social Teaching and our Gospel values at Saint Joseph's," he said.
"The success of this initiative demonstrates how our children are learning to become caring, compassionate, and socially responsible citizens."
Mr Needle noted that the fundraising efforts not only benefited the local charities, but also brought the Year 6 class closer together.
"Working towards a common goal like this really strengthened the bonds between the children," he said.
"They supported one another, celebrated their wins, and learned valuable life skills in the process.
"It's an experience they'll carry with them forever."
Dr Kershaw's Hospice and the Diocese of Salford’s Caritas Charity were both overjoyed to receive the generous donations from Saint Joseph's.
"We are delighted to receive the monies raised by Year 6," said Dr Kershaw's Hospice spokesperson Jill Kirkham.
"What a wonderful amount for them to have raised.
"This amount of money goes a long way in helping to support our patients and their families at a time when they need us most and for that we are truly grateful.
"We really couldn’t do what we do without the consistent support like your school gives us."
Caritas Charity representative Kirstie Davidson echoed these sentiments, saying: "Thanks once again to your whole school family for their generosity and for sharing what they have with those in need, especially during these difficult times.
"Together, we will ensure that no one is left behind."
The children at Saint Joseph's have undoubtedly set a shining example for their peers, not just within the school but across the entire Shaw community and beyond.
Their selfless actions have touched the lives of many and their story is a testament to the power of youth-led philanthropy.
As Mrs Knowles proudly added: "I couldn't be more proud of our Year 6 class.
"They've demonstrated that no matter your age, you can make a real difference when you set your mind to it.
"These children are the future leaders and change-makers of our community and I have no doubt they'll continue to do amazing things."
