Gearing up for winter

Date published: 18 October 2024

The council’s work to keep the borough moving over the coming winter months is well under way.

Grit stocks, systems and services are in place to meet the challenge – and the fleet of famous gritters are also back in town.

Staff are constantly monitoring the weather forecasts and road conditions and if temperatures drop and snow or ice is on the way, gritter drivers will carry out precautionary gritting and snow clearing, with ploughs fitted to all vehicles when necessary.

As far as reasonably possible, staff will look to keep the primary highway network free of ice and snow at all times to help ensure safe journeys.

The council's teams will also soon be out filling the borough’s grit bins.

Councillor Chris Goodwin, whose portfolio covers winter readiness, said: “We have contingency plans in place, including for heavy snowfall.

“We already have good supply of grit and we bought it earlier in the year when prices were lower – providing value for money for residents.

“Over winter, as far as reasonably possible, we will look to keep the primary highway network free of ice and snow at all times to help ensure a safe journey for travellers and residents.

“At this time of year, our thoughts should also turn to making sure we are fit and healthy so we can look after ourselves and also our families, friends and neighbours.”

The council’s social media accounts will also share up to date information, including traffic and road closure updates.

For more details about the winter work, visit the council’s website - http://www.oldham.gov.uk/winter

It features the news on gritting routes, locations of grit bins, and tips on how to look after yourself and stay safe.

Staff will also update the winter webpage with any school closures that we are notified about.

However, parents should receive a text message from their child’s school if they are closing for the day.
