Dr Kershaw’s annual Golf Day, which featured the prestigous Dr Kershaw’s Cup competition, raised £7,663, exceeding last year’s total.

With it costing over £14,000 a day to run the Hospice, this figure will make a real difference to so many patients and families across the borough.

The day teed off with breakfast, a welcome and a shotgun start before golfers started their 18 holes, followed by halfway house refreshments, a buffet meal, official prize presentation and a raffle with all proceeds going to the Hospice, and the top prize of a 40” JVC Smart TV up for grabs.

The action-packed day also saw a number of challenges also take place including the longest yard, nearest the pin and the HSBC target challenge.

Alice Entwistle, Fundraising Events Lead at Dr Kershaw’s, said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who attended and supported our Golf Day.

"It was an incredible day and we are so very grateful, it was nice to see so many people out to support the Hospice, and it was great that the sun shined for our golf teams.

"We are thrilled that our Golf Day raised £7,663, a fantastic amount which will help to support so many patients and their families across the local community.”

With 19 teams competing to be crowned the Dr Kershaw's Cup Champions, one lucky team, Team St John’s, captained by Dr Kershaw’s very own doctor, Dr Jimmy Killeen, lifted the coveted trophy at the end along with being presented with vouchers and golf balls for each of the four in the team.

The second-placed team also received an accolade with vouchers and golf balls awarded to each player along with prizes for the challenge winners.

Dr Killeen said: “It was the first time I had attended The Dr Kershaw’s Cup and it was a great day out with my team mates.

"The course was good, the hospitality was great as was the organisation from the Dr Kershaw’s team and the volunteers supporting were lovely.

"We were very surprised but very happy to win and will be back to defend our title next year!

"My role sees me supporting patients on the Inpatient Unit at the Hospice on a daily basis and I feel very privileged and very lucky to work in such a great environment.

"Every day I see first-hand how the money from the Golf Day will help and make such a difference to our patients and their loved ones, it means so much to take part to support the Hospice.”

Alice added: “Thank you to our main event sponsor, Wiggett Homes, our hole sponsors – John Lord, Monarch Metals and Low Meadows Property and to HSBC for their support.

"Thank you to Crompton and Royton Golf Club and their fantastic caterers for their support with the day and to every person and company who donated raffle prizes which were used on the day to raise vital funds.

"Thank you also to our wonderful volunteers who supported with the event.”
