Oldham Academy North opens state-of-the-art gym on National Fitness Day

Date published: 23 September 2024

E-ACT The Oldham Academy North opened a brand-new, state-of-the-art gym facility, to coincide with National Fitness Day.

The gym, named TOAN Up! after the academy’s nickname locally, is set to transform the academy’s PE curriculum and co-curricular offer, as well as supporting wellbeing initiatives for both students and staff.

The gym has been created from an unused dance studio space and features a range of specialist, top quality equipment designed to support a variety of fitness activities, from cardio workouts to strength training.

With its modern, spacious design, the gym will be open from 6am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, providing easy access for students and staff to prioritise their physical and mental wellbeing.

The newly-opened gym will play a pivotal role in enhancing the school’s PE curriculum and co-curricular programs, offering students new opportunities to stay active and build lifelong fitness habits.

It will also support the academy’s ongoing commitment to student and staff wellbeing.

As well as being open for use before and after school, classes such as boxing and girl-only fitness sessions will also be held in the gym.

David Parkinson, Assistant Headteacher (Personal Development) of E-ACT The Oldham Academy North, said: “We are incredibly excited to officially open our new gym facility, and it’s fantastic that the launch coincided with National Fitness Day.

“Our state-of-the-art gym will not only support our PE provision but also enhance our co-curricular activities and overall wellbeing offer.

"By providing access to this incredible facility, we aim to help our students and staff adopt healthier lifestyles, improve their fitness levels, and strengthen their mental resilience.”

Jessica Giraud, Headteacher of E-ACT The Oldham Academy North, added: “The wellbeing of our students and staff is something we take very seriously at E-ACT The Oldham Academy North and we understand the pressures young people and those working in education face.

"This is a significant investment in the health and wellbeing of our academy community, and it clearly demonstrates our commitment to providing an environment where students and staff can focus on their fitness and mental health.

"We are all looking forward to seeing our academy community making the most of this great new resource this year.”
