Mossley charity shop shortlisted for national award

Date published: 30 August 2024

Homelessness charity Emmaus Mossley is celebrating after its second-hand superstore was shortlisted for The UK’s Favourite Charity Shop Award, and the charity now needs your vote to help win the top prize.

Emmaus Mossley supports people who have experienced homelessness by providing them with a home, companionship, tailored support and work opportunities.

The charity’s large second-hand superstore offers an eclectic mix of items including furniture, fashion, books, music and bric-a-brac alongside handmade and upcycled items.

All income raised from the Emmaus Mossley second-hand superstore is used by the charity to sustain their 26-bedroom community and the support given to people who live there.

Items purchased from the store pay for food, energy costs, tailored support and training, helping people on the journey away from homelessness.

Hazel Hodkinson, Retail Manager at Emmaus Mossley, said: “It’s a big team effort to run and maintain our second-hand superstore and we’re extremely proud and very grateful to receive this national recognition.

“The Emmaus Mossley second-hand superstore is so much more than a traditional charity shop.

"We’re always keen to improve and evolve the store, ensuring it’s a welcoming and exciting place to visit with different events happening throughout the year.

“Thank you to everyone who nominated us for The UK’s Favourite Charity Shop Award and please vote for us in the second round to help us become the North West winner and be in with a chance of winning the overall prize.”

The UK’s Favourite Charity Shop Award launched earlier this summer as part of the Charity Retail Association’s 25th Anniversary celebrations.

The competition was inundated with nearly 6,500 nominations for charity shops, from which six finalists were identified in each region.

Robin Osterley, Chief Executive of the Charity Retail Association, said: “We have had a fantastic reception to The UK’s Favourite Charity Shop Award so far and it has been brilliant to see so many people getting involved to share what makes their favourite charity shop so special.

“People can read on our website some of the stories that were submitted as part of the nomination process and find out more about the charity shops before they vote.

"I’d like to congratulate all the charity shops who have been nominated for the award and wish all the shortlisted shops good luck!”

Charity shop fans have until midnight on Monday, September 23 to vote for their favourite charity shop in each region.

The overall winning shop will be presented with The UK’s Favourite Charity Shop Award at a special event in November.
