‘Speech by PM shows local people that the grown-ups are back in charge’, insists Oldham MP McMahon

Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton MP Jim McMahon says that in light of yesterday’s speech by the Prime Minister about the new government’s work to fix the foundations of our country, local people can be reassured that they finally have a government where 'the grown-ups' are back in charge.

Given from Downing Street’s rose garden, where some of the Tory Covid lockdown parties took place, the Prime Minister Keir Starmer gave a frank address to the nation about the recently-elected Labour government’s work to rebuild Britain and the scale of the task ahead.

Mr McMahon said: “Labour promised change at the general election just under two months ago, and we secured a historic mandate to deliver it as part of a decade of national renewal.

"Tuesday’s speech by the Prime Minister shows how central this vision is to the government’s ongoing programme.

"From addressing the £22 billion black hole in the public finances we inherited from the Tories, to beginning the work to deliver wealth creation in every part of our country with the National Wealth Fund and reforms to workers’ rights – the new government is getting the job done.

"This means that local people in Oldham West, Chadderton and Royton, after 14 long years, can be reassured that they have a government of true public service which is on their side.

"Tough decisions will be taken head on rather than dodged, and taxpayer money will be safeguarded rather than wasted.

"Yes, the path to change can be difficult in the short-term, but the long-term gain will be worth it: communities which are stronger and better off.”
