Dr Kershaw’s carnival-themed Summer Fayre proves a huge success

Dr Kershaw’s enjoyed a terrific start to the summer holidays by welcoming the community to the Hospice for their carnival-themed Summer Fayre.

The Fayre is just one of their annual events which enables the Hospice to bring in vital funds for patient care in Oldham, as well as enabling the Hospice to develop their relationships with their many supporters.

The event saw over 600 members of the local community turn out to support the Hospice, a place which means so much to those who have had their loved ones cared for by the Hospice Team.

With stalls and activities situated in the Hospice and outside in the beautiful gardens, those who attended on the day had the opportunity to take part in an afternoon of family friendly fun; including carnival games such as hook-a-duck, roll-a-coin, tin-can alley, and a coconut shy.

Visiting children delighted in the bouncy castles, helter-skelter and fire engine, plus the face painting and craft activities, while grown ups enjoyed the raffle, tombola, and the craft, jewellery and plant stalls in the outdoor marquee.

Attendees were also treated to entertainment by DJ Mick Matthews and live music from the Pennine Mencap Rhodes Bank Choir and singer Denis Ferrige, they enjoyed the food on offer including pizzas, hot dogs, nachos, cakes and even a gin cocktail featuring the Hospice’s very own 1989 specialist Gin.

Fundraising Events Lead at Dr Kershaw’s, Alice Entwistle, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have welcomed so many members of the community to our Summer Fayre earlier in the month.

"The day was a huge success with around 600 people joining us to try their luck on our carnival games, ride the Helter Skelter, meet our mascot, Hartley, explore a fire engine, try on police uniforms, browse the stalls set out by our independent local traders, enjoy a refreshing gin cocktail or beer, shop for toys, listen to the live music, or to indulge in our carnival snacks including hot dogs, pizza, nachos, candyfloss and cake!

"It was a joy to see our visitors leaving the Hospice with big smiles, balloon animals, DIY craft crowns and prizes from our raffle and tombola.

"We are thrilled to announce that our Summer Fayre brought in just over £9,000 (an incredible £3,000 more than last year), towards patient care at the Hospice, exceeding all expectations.

"We'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who came out to support the event, we hope you had a lovely afternoon.

"We would also like to thank our Hospice volunteers, our neighbours and event sponsors, Booth’s Garden Centre, our corporate volunteers from Natwest, FRC Group and JLA Limited, Photographer Ken Rowlatt, DJ Mick Matthews, Singer Denis Ferrige, Pennine Mencap Rhodes Bank Choir, Greater Manchester Fire and Police Services, LLK Pizza Pros, BMS Event Medics, Kershaw's Krafties, our independent local traders, and for the generous donations made by Warburtons, Tesco, Asda, B&M and Bidfood Royton.

"Your amazing support means so much to our Hospice, our patients and their loved ones across the community.”

Steve Booth, Manager at Booth’s Garden Centre, added: “It was fantastic to see the Hospice so busy on the day and I’m really pleased the event was a success.

"It means a great deal to support our neighbours and local Hospice.”

Last year, Dr Kershaw’s Summer Fayre had included the launch of loveable Hospice Mascot, Hartley.

With his heart shaped nose and cheeky spirit, he’s proved to be popular at fundraising events across Oldham.

If you'd like Hartley to attend your event, please contact the Hospice’s Fundraising Team on 0161 624 9984 or email: fundraising@drkh.org.uk.

The next big event at the Hospice will be the Christmas Fayre taking place on Sunday, November 17.
