Oldham Sea Cadets Unit were in action yesterday (Sunday) as members of the public attended a hugely popular open day.
The event, which featured creative workshops, fun-filled attractions, outdoor family games, engine demonstrations, tombola and prize stalls, food and refreshments and much more, took place at Oldham Sea Cadets HQ on Yates Street in Derker.
Members of the public toured the unit, chatted to volunteers and cadets and saw some impressive displays, which aimed to encourage more young people and volunteers to join the unit.
Sergeant. Danny Angle, Oldham’s Officer in Charge, said: “It was a great day out for the whole family to experience first-hand what Sea Cadets get up to twice a week.
"It’s a fantastic opportunity to get to know other young people in the area and you’ll make some great friends and learn new skills that will give you a great head start in life and will really boost your confidence.”
Sea Cadets has supported thousands of young people in Oldham to learn nautical skills.
They offer skills and qualifications such as Duke of Edinburgh Award, BTEC and RYA accredited courses.
Sea Cadets offers a safe place for young people aged 9-18 to progress with pathways that link the Five Ways to Wellbeing by being connected to their community, being active, taking notice of themselves and others, continuing to learn new skills and giving their time to support others.
They help young people to find balance, build confidence and resilience, and boost mental health and wellbeing.
Oldham, which is part of national charity Sea Cadets, gives young people a new perspective.
They attempt to broaden horizons and create possibilities.
Working across the UK with 14,000 young people between 9 and 18, Sea Cadets help them see the world with confidence, gained through the challenge of nautical adventure and a Royal Navy ethos.
Their aim is to help more young people to see the future that they want - and make that future happen.
The unit is open Monday and Thursday from 19;15 - 21:30, and meets at Yates Street, Derker, OL1 4AP.
