Combined rescue team operation helps to save injured runner

Mountain rescue teams combined to save a runner injured in the Spine Race on Sunday.

Oldham Mountain Rescue Team were notified by Derbyshire Police the runner had injured his leg while on his way up Black Hill.

Unable to continue, he had called for assistance.

The team deployed from the A635 heading south along the Pennine Way.

At the same time, Woodhouse Mountain Rescue Team were deployed from Holme Moss to assist.

After walking 2.5 miles route to reach the casualty with vital equipment, OMRT reached the runner, where he was assessed by their remote medical rescue technician to have a lower leg injury.

The leg was splinted to make it comfortable for the journey out.

He was placed on a stretcher.

And, using a wheel to assist the carry, the team members from Woodhead and Oldham carried the patient 2.3 miles to the team’s off-road ambulance.

After a short but bumpy drive, the teams met with North West Ambulance Service who took the patient to hospital.

The team wish the runner a speedy recovery and hope he gets back to running soon.

Thirteen members of Oldham Mountain Rescue Team, seven from Woodhead MRT and one from Holme Valley MRT were involved for four-and-a-half hours.
