The Rotary Club of Saddleworth - formed over 50 years ago - together with guests, celebrated the continuing service the Club provides to the local community.

Club members welcomed local dignitaries and guests from all the other Rotary Clubs in Oldham to this annual celebration - coupling as the Charter Night celebration - which was held at the White Hart in Lydgate.

The Club welcomed the Deputy Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Eddie Moores and his wife Deputy Mayoress Kath Moores, Saddleworth Parish Council Chair Barbara Beeley and her Consort Alicia Marland and Rotary’s District Governor, Swati Mukherjee, to the celebrations.

After a pleasant evening exchanging views on a variety of topics, Rotary members reminded guests of the charitable work that Rotary did locally, nationally and internationally.

The evening was completed when long-time pantomime dame Jeffrey Longmore spoke about his life in theatre, much of which was in Oldham.

Recounting many stories from his long and continuing theatre acting career, centred around his history as a pantomime dame, Jeffrey had the audience captivated, amused, reminiscent and thoughtful.

All this while he transformed himself into the pantomime dame, which has been a major part of his theatrical career.

And the Rotary Club of Saddleworth presented Jeffrey with a cheque for £250 for Dr Kershaw’s Hospice, the charity chosen by Jeffrey to benefit from his talk.
