A Mossley arts centre is showing its support for the Great Big Green Week.
The Vale is taking part in the national event, which is the UK’s biggest celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.
It runs from June 8-16.
Free activities for all ages include a guided walk, permaculture gardening sessions and a coding for good challenge.
On Saturday, June 8, Matt Catt will lead a walk from Micklehurst Brook at The Vale to Dovestone Reservoir.
Along the way, you will discover the importance of water to Mossley's history as a mill town and its present use as a source of energy.
Walkers will also learn about The Vale's own micro-hydro generator.
Made from recycled parts including an old Segway wheel, the community-devised, homemade generator aims to generate enough power to offset the monthly live music events at The Vale.
There is no need to book to join the walk.
Just turn up at 10.30am for an 11am start.
The walk is just over 3.5 miles.
Also on Saturday (and again on Saturday, June 15) you are invited to spend some time and lend a hand in The Vale's wild garden.
Using permaculture gardening techniques, Jayne McLean Kremer and volunteers are working to make the land known as Our Space eco-friendly and fit for all Mossley birds, bees and everything in-between.
Runs from 10-12.30pm. No need to book.
No experience required and refreshments will be provided.
Ninjas young and older from the Stalybridge CoderDojo will be putting their coding skills to work on a practical project to get monitoring equipment at Saddleworth Community Hydro online.
This coding for good challenge is part of a Community Knowledge Fund research project.
And later in the month, just in time for the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, renewable energy specialists Steve Duckworth Electrical will be installing 46 high efficiency solar panels on the roof of The Vale.
The panels have been paid for by a grant from Saddleworth Hydro Sustainability Fund.
The first Great Big Green Week took place in September 2021, and was the largest event for climate and nature ever seen in the UK.
Communities came together once more in 2022 and 2023, with over a quarter of a million people getting involved each year.
The Vale arts centre is at Vale Mill, off Micklehurst Road in Mossley, OL5 9JL.
