Mayor of Oldham returns for a second term

Councillor Zahid Chauhan OBE has been re-elected for a second term of office as Mayor of Oldham.

Cllr Chauhan’s re-election comes after the sad passing of his wife, the Mayoress Afsheen Chauhan, in March this year.

Having taken ill early on in the Mayoral year, Cllr Chauhan understandably scaled back his civic commitments to dedicate more time to the care of his wife and three children.

Upon his inaugural election in May 2023, Cllr Chauhan promised to dedicate his Mayoral year to granting residents’ wishes – in an update to the role’s more traditional approach to charity fundraising. 

The Labour and Co-operative councillor, who represents Alexandra ward and is also a GP, has served on the cabinet previously and was the Deputy Mayor under Elaine Garry during her tenure between May 2022 – May 2023.

Speaking about his re-election, Cllr Chauhan said: “I am sincerely honoured to be given the opportunity to serve as Mayor of Oldham for a second year.

“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to all the people who have supported me over the last 12 months, your kindness and generosity has been truly appreciated.

“I am looking forward to serving the residents of my much loved hometown and will continue to champion projects that make a real difference to people in our communities.”

Yesterday’s (Wednesday) Mayor Making ceremony took place in the Council Chamber, with Cllr Eddie Moores also returning for a second term as Deputy Mayor.
