Mountain heroes called to two dramas during one hectic day

Monday proved to be a busy day for Oldham Mountain Rescue Team.

The first of two call-outs was a request from North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust in the afternoon for assistance with a walker on Blackstone Edge who suffered a suspected lower leg fracture.

Colleagues at Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team were contacted as the incident was located on the boundary of both teams’ areas.

North West Air Ambulance Charity were also tasked to deploy to the casualty location near the Trig point.

Both teams’ vehicles were deployed and two members of Calder Valley Search and Rescue Team, who were nearby, headed up to the top of the hill to meet with the Air Ambulance.

First Aid was provided by the helicopter paramedics and, with assistance from the two Calder Valley SRT members, the casualty was carried to the helicopter for the onward journey to hospital.

Thanks to all the emergency service agencies involved.

Eight Oldham MRT and 18 Calder Valley SRT Team members were involved for one hour and 45 minutes.

The second call-out was from Greater Manchester Police in the evening who had received a call from a runner in the Dovestones area to say they had heard shouts for help from below Indians Head / Wimberry.

The team was deployed to check the area to see if there was anyone who needed our assistance.

An aircraft from the National Police Air Service HQ was also deployed to sweep the area to look for anyone on the hillside.

No injured parties were found, however two members of the public who were in the area at the time admitted shouting and waving while on the hill.

Satisfied that this was the probable source of the shouting, the team and aircraft were stood down.

Fifteen team members were involved for two hours.
