A new sports facility containing a football pitch and cricket nets will be built inside a glass manufacturing factory in Mossley.

Tameside Council’s planning officers have approved Poesia Property Holdings’ proposal for five cricket lanes alongside a football pitch for small-sided games inside their Waggon Road site.

The new indoor sports facilities would provide year-round use for the general public to book out, given it would be indoors.

The Poesia Glass Studio will remain in operation at the front of the site, with the back of their workspace becoming part of the R-Kix Performance Centre brand.

The warehouse space has become dilapidated and has been underutilised for several years, the planning papers state.

The idea behind this is to generate more income by hiring out the pitches and cricket lanes on an hourly basis.

Proposals say the area would be open from 9am until 10pm on weekdays with an earlier cut off time of 8pm at weekends and bank holidays.

The area would be open to use by all members of the community including individuals, friends, work colleagues, children, football/cricket teams or other sporting clubs.

The site would also be reconfigured to create a main reception area as well as toilet facilities.

A total of 28 car parking spaces out of 38 would be allocated for the new sports facility - with the rest remaining for the glass manufacturer.

The planning statement read: “The site is vacant and currently unable to make any meaningful contribution towards the borough’s industrial or employment floorspace requirements.

“Our view is that the proposed change of use will not adversely impact upon the wider land supply within Tameside, particularly given the range of available warehouse and commercial space within the immediate area.”
