It will be business as usual for the 11 contests in the Saddleworth and Oldham Area Whit Friday Band Contest on May 24.

Interest in what is widely considered to be the town’s ‘flagship event’ continues to grow year on year as bands travel from across the country and abroad to share the prestigious day.

And this year, at least three bands from Europe, one from Northern Ireland and two from Australia are scheduled to take part in the spectacular event.

Robert Rodgers, the event coordinator, said: ”And who knows, there could be more, such is the variety of bands on the circuit all vying for being top dog on the night.”

But he emphasiised visitors and spectators should be aware officers who control the evening’s events have said all contests must terminate at or before midnight to allow passage of normal traffic through the venues.

And he went on: ”There was some initial concern in the group when they were briefed about the extra cost of the infrastructure needed to operate the event which is provided through the Area Hub.

“However, in spite of budget cutbacks, the council have pulled out all the stops and generously covered the financial outlay for this year.

“The group is extremely grateful for this support and are very much aware of the constraints put on the council’s budget.

"With this in mind, the group would be delighted to hear from any businesses who could offer some financial backing for the event, which has been tagged ‘the Greatest Free Show.’

“Each year, individual contests have to find their own prize money, and then, through negotiation, have to make the area prize for which they are seeking sponsorship, large or small and either individually or jointly."

Historically, sponsors have included Tesco, United Co Op, the Oldham Chronicle, Benchmark, Redrow Construction, Bondgate, Paul Speak Developments, Navigation Brass, Fodens Virtual Contest and two personal donations from people who appreciate all that the 11 villages do for the community.

Potential sponsors who may be in a position to support the cause can contact Mr Rodgers on 07843 082582, who will explain what publicity would be on offer in return for support.

Mr Rodgers added: ”Event workers are getting older so the other pressing issue with some of the contests is the lack of working personnel on the night and in the preceding week.

“If you think you would like to be part of a tiring but fulfilling night’s work, providing entertainment for some 50,000 spectators, then initially please contact the central website: www saddleworthwhitfriday.co.uk.

He added: “All that is needed now is the same beautiful weather as last year but, come rain or shine, the streets of Saddleworth will be ringing out with the sounds of brass at the end of May.”
