They came … they marched … and they conquered.
On Good Friday in bright sunshine, the nationally-acclaimed Saddleworth Morris Men danced their way into the hearts and minds of villagers across the community in celebration of their 50th anniversary year.
In their distinctive floral hats and pristine waistcoats, the side swept into thronged arenas from Uppermill to Delph to a vanguard of marching sounds from their bell-bedecked clogs.
Peter Ashworth, the founding member, who lives in Dobcross, said: ”It’s all about turning out with your mates, having a few beers and a laugh and enjoying the dance.
"They enjoy the comradeship - they enjoy being with each other.
“Looking back to the early days, we had plumbers, bricklayers, doctors and solicitors as members - everyone gets along with each other.
"That still exists.
“I’m just pleased that the morris has such a warm, traditional place in so many people’s hearts,” he added.
