Over 170 elderly members of Failsworth community received Salvation Army care packages

The Salvation Army provided care packages to older people in Failsworth community this Christmas

More than 170 care packages were handed out to elderly members of the Failsworth community over Christmas in a bid to tackle loneliness and isolation during typically one of the happiest times of the year.  

In total 176 care packages were put together by staff and a team of volunteers at Failsworth Salvation Army, located on Oldham Road, and hand delivered to residents of four care homes in the area.  

Featuring a Christmas card, singularly wrapped cakes, mince pies, crackers and chocolates, the packages were received by elderly members of the community who, although not living alone, may have felt lonely at Christmas with no family around.  

Major Michael Allen, church leader of the Salvation Army in Failsworth, said: “We have a strong passion to care for everyone within our community and remembering the elderly members who may experience loneliness is a key part of our work.  

“Christmas is a time for families and loved ones to come together in joy, but for some that sadly isn’t the reality.

"We put the care packages together as a small gift of kindness to show that people are not forgotten, they’re recognised, valued and very much a part of our community.”
