Latics have suspended Alex Reid
Striker Alex Reid didn't feature in Latics' National League fixture at Hartlepool United yesterday (Boxing Day) after he was suspended by the club during the morning of the match.
Later in the evening, after Latics had triumphed 3-1 at Hartlepool, it was then also announced that defender Harrison McGahey had been removed from his position of vice-captain.
Twenty-eight-year-old Reid, who has scored five goals for Latics so far this season, and McGahey (28), are the subject of an investigation after comments allegedly made by the players on a controversial Christmas Day social media post.
A Latics club statement read: "Oldham Athletic has suspended striker Alex Reid pending an internal investigation.
"The course of action follows reports of a social media post which appeared on 25 December.
"Alex will be suspended while the investigation takes place and the club will make no further comment until it is complete."
Reid joined Latics in December, 2022, and has since scored nine goals in 31 competitive appearances.
McGahey joined Latics from Scunthorpe on a free transfer during the summer of 2021.
A later club statement regarding McGahey read: "The club can confirm Harrison McGahey has been removed from his position of vice-captain pending an internal investigation.
"This follows his reported involvement in a social media post which appeared on 25 December.
"No further comment will be made until the investigation is complete."
"You play for Oldham, you have to represent the supporters correctly," said Latics manager Micky Mellon.
