Local businesses, Latics and council team up to bring Christmas joy to over 500 children across Oldham

Masses of generous donations have flooded into Boundary Park

Oldham Council staff, along with elected members and local businesses, are making this Christmas extra special for more than 500 children in the borough.

The response to this year's Christmas Toy Appeal has been described as "phenomenal", with hundreds of vulnerable children set to receive gifts this festive season, many of whom may not have received a present otherwise.

One main supporter of this year's campaign has been Latics, with masses of generous donations flooding into Boundary Park.

Councillor Arooj Shah, Leader of Oldham Council, said: "While many people are understandably excited about Christmas, we know it can be tough for some.

"With the rising cost of living, more families are struggling to afford even the basics, let alone gifts.

“That's why the Council’s present appeal is so important; helping to bring some joy to children who might not expect to receive a gift this year.

"We're so grateful to the local businesses who have supported us to help make this happen."

Martin Vose, Head of Community at Latics, added: “Oldham Athletic are proud to support the Oldham Council Christmas Toy Appeal, which involved collaborative working to ensure that hundreds of children across the borough have presents to open this year.

“Thanks to everyone who contributed, including Firwood, Holy Trinity Shaw, St Mary's High Crompton, St James Thornham church, Character Options, Sinco Creations, Co-op Uppermill, Oldham Athletic Military Veterans Supporters Group, and Oldham Athletic supporters who donated a lot over the past weeks."

Local company Tilbury Douglas also supported the appeal this year, with a spokesperson adding: "We're delighted to support our valued client with Oldham Council’s Christmas Toy Appeal.

"Thanks to everyone who supported this very worthy cause to help put a smile on children’s faces this Christmas."

In addition to Oldham Athletic and Tilbury Douglas, businesses that have supported the appeal include Pathways to Opportunities, Fern Bank Therapeutic Community, Character Options, Housing 21, Great Places, Rhodes and Son, Wilmott Dixon & Dalkia, and Tesco.

All gifts are in the process of being distributed to children around the borough.
