Date published: 23 October 2023

Heroic Saddleworth-based Amira Mirza, who is 22, completed the Manchester Half Marathon in support of the National Deaf Children’s Society.

Amira was accompanied by with two friends and work colleagues, Callum Grigor and Frankie Wood, who were also raising funds for the National Deaf Children’s Society.

She was supported on the day by her boyfriend Ben and best friend Ellen.

She ran for the National Deaf Children’s Society in support of her brother, Haaris, 17, who became deaf at the age of three and the family received support from the charity.

The trio have smashed their target of £500, and thanks to some generous match-funding by their employer, have so far raised an amazing £2,000 for the charity, which supports the UK’s 50,000 deaf children.

Amira is a graduate consultant for infrastructure consultancy BTTC and lives in Saddleworth with her parents, Haaris and sister Zahra.

Amira said: “Running the Manchester Half Marathon for the National Deaf Children’s Society was an amazing experience.

"The atmosphere made it so enjoyable and knowing we were raising money for such a deserving cause helped spur us on to the finish line when it started to get tough.

"It’s something I’ll never forget and feel very proud of.”

Melissa Jones, who supports fundraisers for the National Deaf Children’s Society, said: “I want to say a huge thank you to Amira for completing the Manchester Half Marathon for us.

"You’re a hero in our eyes and we can’t thank you enough.

"We’re so proud of you.

“The National Deaf Children’s Society is dedicated to supporting the UK’s 50,000 deaf children and their families.

"The efforts of fantastic fundraisers like Amira will help us to keep on doing our vital work, now and into the future.”
