When Dr Eamonn O’Daly arrived in Saddleworth in 2006, he soon realised there was a gap in provisions locally for those whose personal circumstances required them to provide care for their partners or other close family members.
From his own professional and personal experiences caring for his sick wife, Dr O'Daly knew the challenges that this situation creates, and from his own efforts the Saddleworth Carers Group was formed.
Sadly over the years, care for partners and close family members has increased and over the years the Group has expanded, still led by Dr O’Daly but with others providing a helping hand in running the Group.
The Saddleworth Carers Group are determined to provide support, respite and companionship to as many people as possible caught in this situation.
Meeting twice a month in Saddleworth, the Group provide refreshments and a safe environment to relax with like minded people and also speakers, relevant information and advice on a range of topics that may help members cope with their day to day and longer-term needs.
When Saddleworth Rotary Club were approached to support the Group, they were only too happy to help.
Running a support network like the carers group does not come without cost and in these difficult times finding the money to continue providing charitable services like carers support is becoming more challenging.
Saddleworth Rotary Club were, however, in a strong position to provide some financial support following the success of the Wellifest Music Festival and Saddleworth Show 2023, which the Club runs in conjunction with Oldham Metro Rotary Club.
They have now donated £1,500 to the Saddleworth Carers Group to assist in securing their invaluable services to local people.
Speaking to the Group at one of their recent meetings, Jon Stocker outlined some of the work Rotary did locally.
He said that Rotary Club members were happy to support their group, which clearly has a role to play local in helping each other cope with the challenges associated with caring.
