Thompson and Redfearn exit Latics

Date published: 12 October 2023

Latics' interim management team of Steve Thompson and Neil Redfearn have both left Boundary Park.

The move comes as the Latics hierarchy appear to be closing in on a permanent replacement for David Unsworth, who was sacked last month.

Thompson was immediately turned to in the aftermath of Unsworth's departure, while Latics club legend Redfearn joined as his assistant soon after.

Since Thompson took the first-team reins, Latics have steadied the ship somewhat, having won three and drawn three National League games.

Before that, they were in the relegation zone after a dismal start to the campaign under Unsworth.

A Latics club statement read this morning (Thursday): "Steve Thompson and Neil Redfearn have left their position as the interim management team ahead of the club making its next appointment.

"We would like to place on record our thanks to Steve and Neil for their work in taking charge of the first team during recent weeks.

"Academy Manager Paul Murray will oversee training ahead of Saturday’s Emirates FA Cup tie against Altrincham.

"An announcement in relation to the managerial position will be made in due course."
