Oldham West and Royton MP Jim McMahon decided to step down as shadow environment secretary ahead of Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer’s reshuffle of his top team.
Posting his resignation letter on social medai, Mr McMahon stated that he remained a “firm supporter of Keir” despite his decision to resign.
The local MP added: “After a testing year I want to focus on getting my health back to full strength so that I can make a full and active contribution to the general election campaign heading towards us, and to prioritise my constituents.”
Last October, Mr McMahon, who previously served as leader of Oldham Council, thanked the Royal Oldham Hospital for care he received while being treated for an infection, praising staff for their "compassion and dedication".
Meanwhile, Ashton and Failsworth MP Angela Rayner has been given new roles in Labour’s shadow cabinet.
The Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, Ms Rayner has now been given new roles as the Shadow Deputy Prime Minister and Shadow Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.
She was previously Shadow First Secretary of State, Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Shadow Secretary of State for the Future of Work.
