Plans for a new five-storey apartment block in Oldham town centre have been lodged.

Mohammad Khalili-Saman has applied to the council to erect 19 flats for market housing in a block on Bridge Street.

The site was previously occupied by a nightclub, but is now standing empty after demolition was approved by the local authority in 2013.

A number of proposals have previously come forward for the land, including apartments, and commercial space, but these have not been progressed.

Under the latest plans there would be 19 flats created over a new apartment block across five floors.

Of these, 11 would have one bedroom and eight would contain two-bedrooms.

It is also proposed to include seven car parking spaces on the lower ground floor.

However, the supporting planning documents state that the site has a ‘a good location in terms of access to public transport’ and residents and visitors can also make use of public car parking in the local area.

“The scale and massing of the proposal makes an efficient use of the land and very similar to what has been approved in the past,” the design and access report adds.

“A modular brick building was chosen so that it fits in with the surrounding context and is considered appropriate to the adjacent buildings.

“The proposed elevation plays with the use of different treatments of brick to pay its respect to the adjacent properties while creating its own character.”

The proposal includes a lift to allow full access to people of ‘all levels of mobility’ throughout the building, the application states.

A decision on the scheme is expected to be made by the end of October.
