Date published: 01 August 2023

Officers investigating a serious assault in nearby Newton Heath at the weekend have made a fifth arrest.

At around 9:30am on Saturday (July 29), a 49-year-old woman was discovered unconscious and seriously injured in the garden of a property on Rose Bank Road.

She currently remains in hospital.

A 42-year-old man has now been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

He remains in custody for police questioning.

Three women who were arrested on suspicion of assault have since been released on bail.

A man who was arrested on suspicion of assault later on the same day has also been released on bail.

Officers are continuing to investigate the full circumstances of the incident and residents can expect to see increased patrols in the coming days.

Detective Inspector Michelle Buchanan, from GMP's Manchester district, said: "This was a disturbing attack on a woman who is still recovering from her injuries.

"We remain in close contact with her family to provide updates when we can.

"The investigation is very much ongoing, and we are still piecing together an exact timeline of what happened on Saturday morning.

"We are looking at all lines of enquiry and are keeping an open-mind as we carry out our work.

"Officers remain in the area with high-visibility patrols, and I would recommend that local residents chat to them if they have any concerns or queries.

"They are there to offer reassurances and will do what they can to help.

"If anyone has any information to share - including doorbell, dascham, or CCTV footage - I would ask them to get in touch by calling 0161 856 1146, quoting log number 1175 of 29/7/23."
