New nature explorers’ events for children launch at Marsden Moor

The National Trust is launching a new nature explorers’ event for children to learn more about Marsden Moor and the animals and plants that live there.

The free events, run by the ranger team, will involve activities like river dipping, bird watching and plant identification.  

The first event takes place tomorrow (Saturday, June 3) and will focus on surveying small invertebrates that live in the river near Eastergate.

Children can paddle, use fishing nets and help identify the small creatures that live in the water. 

There’ll also be a chance to learn more about the plants that grow along the canal and river. 

National Trust ranger, Francesca Bray, said: “We will be hosting regular nature explorers’ events throughout the summer, to try and inspire the next generation to learn more about the world around them and how to look after it. 

"We know they care about the environment, so these activities will arm them with even more knowledge about plants and animals on Marsden Moor.

“There are also opportunities to have a go at some of the National Trust’s ’50 things to do before you 11 and 3/4s’ list.

"The activities are about forming an enduring connection with nature, playing outdoors and exploring your senses in the wild.” 

The river dipping event will involve a three-mile walk along the canal towpath, with some plant identification along the way.

Numbers are limited, so booking is essential.
