Tea for Trussell is needed more than ever in 2023

Date published: 30 May 2023

Saddleworth Labour Party is organising a second Tea for Trussell event at the Satellite Centre in Greenfield on July 15, from 12 noon to 3pm.

In 2022, Tea for Trussell raised over £600 for the Trussell Trust and collected 10 crates of food for the Oldham Foodbank.

All the money raised was given to the Trussell Trust to help them in their campaign to end food poverty.

This year, as well as asking for an entry fee and running a raffle, bookstall and plant sale, Saddleworth Labour Party would like to offer other local groups helping people with the cost of living crisis the opportunity to raise their profile.

Please get in touch if you would like to have a stall.

Organisers will also be collecting food for the Oldham Foodbank.

Dominic Wall, Labour campaigner in Greenfield and Uppermill, said: "Many families in Saddleworth and across Oldham are finding it harder and harder to make ends meet.

"I’m shocked that the Resolution Foundation found that one in five of us are skipping meals or eating less as food gets more and more expensive.

"Food inflation is still nearly 20% and this affects poorer families most because they spend a bigger share of their budget on food than richer people.

"We want to raise as much money as possible for the Trussell Trust and collect food to support the Foodbank helping local families.

"Please come along to the Satellite Centre and help us raise more money than last year.’

Please contact Hannah Roberts on hulme.roberts@btinternet.com if you can help with donations of raffle prizes, books or plants to sell, or want to run a stall at the event.

Hannah added: "The cost of living crisis is taking a new turn with food prices overtaking energy costs as the pressure point for households.

"The Foodbank is helping more and more families including people in work and those relying solely on benefits.

"And even though wider inflation is falling, this just means prices are rising less fast, not that anything is getting cheaper.

"Families are under real pressure and we want to help where we can."
