Oldham Active reveals £500k investment in its leisure facilities
Date published: 19 May 2023
The refurbishments and upgrades are all due to be completed by late 2023
Oldham Active (Oldham Community Leisure), the charitable trust that operates leisure facilities in the borough, is investing £500k into the refurbishment and improvement of four of its sites – Chadderton Wellbeing Centre, Failsworth Sports Centre, Oldham Leisure Centre and Royton Leisure Centre.
Work will begin this summer and will be supported by Oldham Active’s partner, the market-leading fitness equipment provider, TechnoGym.
Each of the four sites will see a substantial upgrade to gym space, with a total replacement of the cardiovascular fitness equipment and a redesign to the décor.
Furthermore, across the four sites, new exercise bikes will be installed for indoor cycling.
A state-of-the-art sauna will also be a new addition to Royton Leisure Centre.
The refurbishments and upgrades are all due to be completed by late 2023.
Stuart Lockwood, Oldham Active Chief Executive, said: “As a charitable organisation our aim is to motivate people to lead active, healthy lives; to help achieve this we need inspiring and welcoming facilities, with excellent equipment.
"The Oldham population has some significant challenges regarding inactivity levels and working in partnership with the Council, we recognise the need to prioritise investment in our facilities to encourage participation and promote better wellbeing for all.
“Following the successful refurbishment at Saddleworth Pool and Leisure Centre in 2019 and the positive impact this has had on our customers, it’s fantastic to be able to invest in our other centres and improve our overall offer further.
"We want to ensure all our venues have high quality equipment that’s easy to use and create safe spaces where our customers enjoy spending time.
"This substantial investment demonstrates our commitment to continuous improvement.
“Over the past couple of years, we have received ongoing requests from customers for a sauna facility at Royton Leisure Centre.
"We have listened and are extremely excited to announce the introduction of a sauna suite as part of the investment.
"We hope customers will enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of this facility for years to come.”
Mr Lockwood added: “Early last year we invested in indoor cycling, introducing an immersive virtual offer with Les Mills classes at Royton and Oldham Leisure Centres, as well as new designated spin studios at Chadderton and Failsworth.
"The final puzzle piece to create an exceptional indoor cycling experience at all our locations will be the complete replacement of all existing bikes with new ones."
