Celebrations will be in the air later this month as Oldham’s hospital radio service, Radio Cavell, marks a landmark 70th anniversary.

The station will host a special party on Saturday, May 20, in the Broadway Lounge at Latics' Boundary Park stadium.

The station began in 1953 by broadcasting live commentaries from Latics and evolved over the years to provide a full service to all patients at the Royal Oldham Hospital, formerly Boundary Park Hospital (and previously to the now defunct Oldham Royal Infirmary).

Named after First World War British Nurse Edith Cavell, the radio station is one of the oldest in the country.

As part of their all-year celebrations, the Head of Radio Cavell is trying to make contact with former members and volunteers to join the celebrations throughout the year.

Kent Wells, who has been with the station since 1983 and has been chairman since 2014, is appealing to anyone who has been involved with the station to contact him prior to Broadway Lounge event.

“If you are a former volunteer at the station, or you know someone who was, then Radio Cavell would love you to get in touch with them so they can involve as many people as possible in celebrating the incredible feat of 70 years of broadcasting to the patients in the hospitals of Oldham,” said Kent.

“We are also asking anyone who took part as a guest on one of the shows, particularly those who featured on the Chris Mylett show on Sundays, or a Chance to Meet.

“Throughout the year, special programmes featuring new and archive material, by past and present members, will be broadcast to the listeners.

"So, if you have any old recordings, please let us know as we would like to include it in our output.

“There is also a special evening of music and nostalgia to mark the anniversary on May 20 and we would love to see as many people as possible coming along to share memories and old photos.”

Radio Cavell is run entirely by volunteers who are passionate about providing a source of entertainment and comfort to those who are in hospital.

The station offers a wide range of programming, including music, news, and chat shows.

The music played on the station is carefully selected to cater to a diverse range of tastes, from classic hits to modern pop and rock.

In addition to providing entertainment, Cavell also plays an important role in keeping patients informed about what's happening in the hospital and the wider community.

The station regularly features interviews with hospital staff and local community leaders, as well as updates on health and wellbeing.

The volunteers who run Radio Cavell Oldham are dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of those who are in hospital.

They work hard to create a welcoming and friendly atmosphere, and are always on hand to chat with patients and offer support.
