A respected Saddleworth community champion who was described as a 'Gentle Giant', has died.
Ian McInnes, who was 85 and who served in the Royal Air Force, passed away on April 14.
He filled his life in the service of others.
He was a Magistrate, Councillor, Rotarian, author of military books, charity fund raiser and host parent for the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline.
Paying tribute, his family said Ian was a very community spirited person and always ready to give help and advice.
He was a devoted family man, husband, father, grandad and great grandad and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
John Battye, a former Mayor of Oldham, said Ian was a 'gentle giant' in many ways.
He served on Oldham Council and Saddleworth Parish Council for many years.
“Ian was quietly spoken and his speeches were always measured and well prepared," said John.
"Behind the scenes he and Alma were stalwarts on both the Mayor of Oldham’s Charity Appeal Committee and Saddleworth Chairman’s Charity Committee.
“Unfortunately he had to step aside from his charity work a few years ago due to his declining ill health.
"Alma continues to dedicate herself to supporting many local charities.
“Ian and Alma used to enjoy many happy times at their apartment in Malta.”
Ian Brett, president of Saddleworth Rotary Club where Ian was a member, said: “At this time our thoughts and prayers are with Alma and family.
"Rest in peace Ian.”
Cremation take place on Wednesday, May 10, at 1.30pm at Hollinwood Crematorium.
A Humanist service will then be followed by a celebration of Ian’s life at the Conservative Club, High Street, Uppermill.
No flowers please, but donations can be made to Help for Heroes.
