Walking group's Euro pilgrimage raises £1,400

A Failsworth walking group raised £1,400 for a forces charity by taking on the Camino de Santiago.

The Camino de Santiago is a pilgrimage walk that stretches across Portugal, Spain and France, and the Failsworth walkers completed the last leg, which was between Sarria and Santiago - a distance of 110km.

A walking group spokesperson said: "We arrived in Madrid, then we had a long train journey to Sarria.

"We then started walking to Santiago after staying at different villages and hostels on the route."

The Failsworth Walking Group raised money for the SSAFA - the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association.

The SSAFA is a mental health charity which helps the armed forces.

Last year their teams of volunteers and employees helped more than 79,500 people in need, from Second World War veterans to young men and women who have served in more recent conflicts, and their families.

The group chose the SSAFA as it is a largely unrecognised charity and the walkers are very passionate about the armed forces and mental health support.
