Oldham Roughyeds' recently-announced women's team head coach Ste Fitzmartin
Training for Oldham Roughyeds' brand new women’s rugby league team will begin on Saturday, March 25, at Melrose playing fields and the club is inviting anybody interested to get involved.
The training will run between 10am and 12pm and is headed by our recently-announced head coach Ste Fitzmartin.
The club is urging females who are 16 and over, regardless of experience or ability, to come down and be a part of this journey.
Sessions will be every Saturday with the first focused on going through the basics, as well as getting to know each other.
Said Fitzmartin: “This is a fantastic opportunity to join our new and exciting women’s side, as well as meeting new friends at the same time in this exciting sport.
“We are not setting any barriers to joining, you just have to be female and over 16.
"Even if you have never picked up a rugby ball in your life, get down and you never know - you might like it.
“I’ve already had emails from teams wanting to play us, and the aim is to start doing that as soon as we’ve got enough people.
“We’re not just doing this for the fun of it, I want to help individuals progress as well as the club itself.
"We want to get these girls playing at a high level and we want to challenge already established sides.”
Since announcing Fitzmartin as head coach just two weeks ago, interest has been high with ten girls already putting their names down for training.
Fitzmartin is highly experienced in the women’s game having been the assistant coach at St Helens Women’s when they did the Super League and Challenge Cup double in 2021.
Anybody wishing to get involved in the team should email: oldhamwomenrlfc@outlook.com or contact the club on social media.
