Oldham's Chief Superintendent praises public support following Operation AVRO day of action

Date published: 24 February 2023

As Greater Manchester Police’s Operation AVRO day of action in Oldham drew to a close last night (Thursday), the town’s Chief Superintendent Chris Bowen thanked people of the community for their support.

Dozens of people ended up in custody after numerous raids and crackdowns throughout the day, while police officers and staff from other organisations engaged positively with members of the community – of all ages – at numerous associated information events.

Speaking as darkness fell in Oldham last night, Chief Superintendent Bowen said: “The Operation AVRO day drew to a conclusion with 45 people in custody for various offences.

“They range from burglary to supplying drugs, money laundering and domestic abuse.

“I look back on what has been a fantastic day of engagement with our communities too.

“We’ve listened to young people, about the issues they face in the community, and I promise the people of Oldham, we’ll take them into account as we move forward.

“Operation AVRO wasn’t just about today – it’s about framing what we’re going to do in the coming months.

“Just remember, this isn’t over just yet.

“If you’re a criminal in Oldham, we might still be coming to look for you tonight.

“I’m confident the numbers in custody will rise further as we enter into the night.

“I hope you enjoyed Operation AVRO in and around Oldham, and I look forward to meeting and speaking with you all again soon.

“Thank you for your help and thank you for your support.”
