Bogus callers steal cash from 85-year-old woman in Failsworth

An 85-year-old woman from Failsworth has had cash stolen from her home in a "despicable" act by a bogus cold-caller.

Police are appealing for information after the incident last Friday 17 February 2023.

An unknown offender attended her home address under the guise of a cold caller offering "gutter-cleaning services".

When the victim retreated into her house, the offender trespassed by following her in and, once inside, he stole £50.00 in cash. He threatened to return to the victim's address for more money, before making off.

Now, police are appealing for information about the incident.

The offender is described as a white male, aged in his thirties. He is reported to have been wearing a beanie hat and a black coat with a logo on the chest.

Detective Sergeant Matthew Adshead of Oldham Neighbourhood Crime Team said: "This was a despicable act by an offender who has targeted a vulnerable and elderly lady.

"We have reason to believe the offender has made other cold calls and spoken to several residents in the local area, and we believe he is deliberately targeting elderly people.

"Please contact Greater Manchester Police if you have had an encounter with a man matching his description, and who has been making cold calls and offering gutter-cleaning services in your area or at your address.

"We are particularly interested in any footage you might have - including CCTV, doorbell, dashcam, mobile phone, or any other imagery - that shows the offenders face or could help identify him.

"If you have any such information to share, please call 0161 856 4521 or 101 quoting incident number 1485 of 18/02/2023.

"Alternatively you can call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

"Most people who come to your house will be genuine, however it's important to remain vigilant.

Do not feel pressured when answering the door to someone you don’t know, and when hiring tradespeople, remember to take recommendations from people you trust or get references from past customers."

Here are some tips from the police to protect yourself from bogus callers:

• Always lock your doors, even when you’re at home.
• Ask for identification before letting anyone you don’t know into your house.
• Check credentials, including a permanent business address and landline telephone number.
• If you need work done to your home, get several written quotes from trustworthy or recommended firms, then decide who is right for you.
• If in doubt, keep them out.

If you suspect that someone may be a bogus caller, you can call 101 or make a report online at www.gmp.police.uk.  Always call 999 in an emergency.
