‘Women’s Only Wednesdays’ to launch at Chadderton Wellbeing Centre

The sessions will run weekly on a Wednesday morning
Oldham Active (Oldham Community Leisure) is launching Women’s Only Wednesdays at Chadderton Wellbeing Centre this month.
The sessions will run weekly on a Wednesday morning, with women having exclusive use of lane swimming, the sauna and aquacise, as well as a number of group exercise classes including aerobics, BodyPump, Zumba and indoor cycling.
Jo Smallwood, Area Manager, Oldham Active, says: “We were committed in creating a safe space for women to enjoy physical activity. In creating a ‘women’s only’ morning we will provide a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere, particularly for those who haven’t used these facilities before.
“Oldham is very diverse town, which has multiple faith groups living and working across borough, with Chadderton having a high percentage of its population being from the Bangladeshi and Pakistani communities. Oldham Active’s health and wellbeing programmes have to reflect the community we serve. Some women will not use the mixed fitness facilities due to religious reasons, confidence and a fear of feeling intimidated. We are therefore hopeful that, by organising a women’s only morning, we will be able to overcome some of these barriers.
“We want to offer opportunities for more women to get active and have fun in a supportive environment and believe our ‘Women’s Wednesday’ is an ideal route into regular physical activity. The exercise classes and poolside activities are designed to appeal to all women, especially those who would like to try something new.”
Oldham Active will strive to make the pool and exercise classes a completely women only environment, however it can’t always guarantee this on occasions male members of staff may be present.
Any men wishing to use the facilities on a Wednesday morning can still use the gym at Chadderton Wellbeing Centre, as well as taking advantage of swimming and group exercise classes at Oldham Leisure Centre, as part of their membership or in a pay as you go capacity.
