Villagers call Andrew Vance 'The Flying Doctor' with affection in Saddleworth because he has turned this month into an amazing fundraising mission.

Dr Vance, who lives in Denshaw, is senior partner in the Royton and Crompton Family Practice, Partner at the Oldham Family Practice and an Oldham CCG Governing Body Member.

But he tags this month 'Feb-Run-Ary' in memory of his father, Billy, who spent 18 months prior to his tragic death in a nursing home in the community.

Mr Vance senior arrived in Saddleworth from the family home in Ireland in a wheelchair after an accident which resulted in a brain injury.

Dr Vance recalls: “The chair did not last for long as a mix of Billy’s determination, along with support from friends, got him on his feet.

“Villagers would keep an eye out for him as he started walking with his dog.

"And as he grew stronger, we got him to run.

“The running changed him completely, and he received such kindness and support from the reablement team, carers and our friends and neighbours.

“Now we run every day in February in his memory to  support those who need someone to reach out and help.”

Since last February, Dr Vance has helped people from Ukraine, opening up his home in Ireland to 60 refugees and their pets.

He said: “The experience has been unexpectedly positive.

"It was such a massive challenge, and now, 10 months on, they are finding jobs, and new lives in their new home.

“We are running this year in support of the Ukrainian refugees and those in Turkey and Syria who, after suffering war in their country, have now been so badly affected by the recent earthquakes.”

Dr Vance added: “The distance run does not matter - getting involved does.

"Just consider what you can do to get more active.

“Some people are walking, cycling and running every day for 28 days, to get fit and especially to show support for each other.

“And if you get involved, please share your stories.

"If you can, we ask you to support one of the groups we are looking to help this year.”
