New speed safety warning signs to go live across the borough
Date published: 31 January 2023
Some of the new signs will replace existing VAS which were due to be upgraded
Oldham Council has invested £80,000 on new warning signs in a bid to help improve road safety in the borough.
The Vehicle Activated Signs (VAS) inform drivers what speed they are travelling – encouraging them to slow down if they are above the limit.
The new signs will be placed at locations across Oldham that have been identified as priority sites – helping to cut traffic speeds and aid pedestrians.
Some of the new signs will replace existing VAS which were due to be upgraded.
Councillor Hannah Roberts, Oldham Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “The new signs act a reminder to road users to reduce speed and take extra care.
“The locations have been chosen because they are stretches of road where people are known to speed.
"The signs will help create awareness and increase driver and pedestrian safety.
“Cutting the number of accidents on our roads is a priority for the council, which is why we are investing this money.
"All road users should drive responsibly and stick to the speed limit.”
VAS systems use radar technology to detect oncoming vehicles and include a combination of sensors and wireless communications.
