Work begins next week on Oldham Way bridges at Waterloo Street and Wellington Street

Date published: 29 January 2023

Residents and motorists have been reminded that essential improvement works on the Oldham Way bridges at Waterloo Street and Wellington Street will begin next Monday, February 6.

Oldham Way is one of the busiest stretches of road in the borough so the work is needed to ensure the structures are fit for purpose so vehicles can use them for years to come.

The maintenance work is due to be completed in late autumn.

The council secured funding of £4.174m from the government to pay for the scheme.

So, the maintenance can be carried out safely and in the least possible amount of time Waterloo Street and Wellington Street will be closed underneath Oldham Way to all traffic from February 6 until the works are finished.

Oldham Way will remain open during the work, but there will be lane closures taking place.

From February 6, traffic will be down to one lane in both directions.

East bound traffic on Oldham Way will crossover onto the west bound side between the onslip Road to Emmott Way and return back on to the east bound carriageway after Waterloo Street

This will remain until the end of May, then the switch from west bound traffic over to east bound carriageway will take place from June until early November.

Dates are subject to change.

Advanced warning signage will be in place.

Pedestrian access will be maintained with any changes signposted in advance.

The council knows this work will cause inconvenience, so officers have apologised for that in advance.
