Fly-tipping hotspot close to Sholver play area to be cleared

Councillors in St James have successfully bid for funding to clear up the wooded area behind Pearly Bank play area in Sholver, which has been a hotspot for fly-tipping.

Local residents contacted Labour Councillors Leanne Munroe and Councillor Angela Cosgrove to say that the area had become dangerous for children to play in, as it was covered in litter, broken glass, fly-tipping, bricks and building debris.

Bidding through Oldham’s Local Improvement Fund, Cllrs Cosgrove and Munroe were able to make sure that residents had a say on where money was spent in the ward. 

The bid will level the ground, remove the waste, position logs for seating and natural play, and include a children’s outreach event on recycling and looking after the environment.

Councillor Leanne Munroe, Deputy Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: “It’s really important that the community is involved in deciding what improvements need to be made in their area, and I am really excited to see the work here at Pearly Bank and how children will benefit from having a safe, natural play area here in Sholver.”
