Temple Street Soiree will raise much-needed funds for Maggie's

Members of Oldham’s newest temple are braving the great outdoors for its first community event, a fun-filled Street Soiree in aid of a local cancer charity.

Worshippers may have a new, purpose-built temple to house their events, the Shree Swaminarayan Mandir on Copster Hill Road, but they are taking to the streets in their bid to raise much-needed funds for Maggie’s Oldham.

This weekend they are inviting the community to join the soiree, where there’ll be traditional music and dancing on display, as well as a plethora of independent gift and food stalls.

The youngsters can join in the fun too, with plenty of children’s activities taking place.

Maggie’s is a charity based at the Royal Oldham Hospital that provides practical and emotional support and advice for cancer sufferers and their families.

The charity’s first centre opened in Edinburgh in 1996 and now Maggie’s has a network of 30 centres across the UK.

The Street Soiree is supported by Good Eatz, Hair By Minz, Nirbhay, Tropic, Cakes by Nirupa, Sonie’s Beauty Parlour, Spot On Pani Puri, Elegant Touch, Sweets Galore and many more.

The Shree Swaminarayan Mandir’s Manisha Kalyan said: “It’s the first community event we are hosting since we opened the newly-renovated temple earlier this year.

"We’re inviting all those who want to support the Street Soiree to come along, have a great time and help to raise money for a fantastic local cause.”

Trish Morgan, Centre Head at Maggie’s Oldham, added: “We are delighted to support this event and look forward to our partnership with the new Shree Swaminarayan Mandir temple.

"People with cancer and their families need our support now more than ever, so your support is massively appreciated.”

The temple committee’s vice-president, Pravin Vekariya, added: “We’re really looking forward to the Street Soiree, it’s a fantastic opportunity for people in this community to enjoy a great event and support the great work that Maggie’s does for cancer sufferers and their families locally.

“We’re also keen for people to see the finished temple and take part in the ceremonies that will be held on the day.”

The Street Soiree, on Copster Hill Road, takes place on Saturday, December 10, from 5pm to 9pm.
